Washington D.C. Abdominoplasty
The Basics
What is abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty, often referred to simply as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure
intended to flatten a protruding abdominal area, creating smoother lines,
a more toned
appearance,
and generally
more
attractive contour. It is not intended to be considered an alternative to
a weight loss program.
Who is this for?
Most people who pursue an abdominoplasty have loose, saggin skin
around the midsection because of eitiher genetics and the effects
of aging, or due to a previous pregnancy. Many people also are
in relatively good shape of near-ideal weight, but are unsuccessful
in toning this area through exercise.
About the abdominoplasty procedure
Abdominoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis, usually under either general
anesthesia, or local witih sedation, depending on the degree of work being
done. The incision can be placed in the lower part of the abdomen, where
it can be concealed later, even under swimwear. The underlying muscles, fat,
and tissue are manipulated to sculpt the desired shape, excess skin is removed,
and remaining skin is lift to its new, firmer, position.
What is involved
in the abdominoplasty recovery period?
Standard pain medication can be taken to control initial disomfort. It is usually
necessary for patients to give themselves a few days of bed rest. Light activity
can usually be resumed about 7-14 days after surgery, according to comfort
level. More strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 6 weeks. Most
patients ease back into normal work routines in 2- 4 weeks of surgery.
